Japan's Financial Stability, Looking over the last six years the net result of the Japanese Government's financial operations is that anintorest chargo of Y.104,447,000 in 1000 has been reduced in 1911 to Y.90,216,000,

a striking evidence itself of the soundness of the financial policy. Japanese trade has suffered to an even greater extent than that of other countries as the result: of the unsettled conditions in China Industrial expe

expansion particularly...bas rocojvod, n. tem- porary sotback. But oneo peace is restored in China, Japan standa to gain more than any other nation from the revival of trade, and for this she will thank kor unassailable geographical post- tion. Imperial Defence.

In fact, some go so far as to stato that the Canadian Premier has gone to London prepared to submit scheme whereby Canada will offer at least three Dreadnoughts in the immediate future, as a con- tribution towards imperial de- fence. The great advance that Canada has of Into been making in population and in wealth would. cortainly justify huge expenditure by her for the great purpose of her own and the empire's defence generally; and the Hon. The Situation in Canton.. Our chief interest in Canton in the immediate futaro is in the efforts made to maintain peace and order. The extent to which tho authorities have succeeded in this, in the presonus of enormous difficulties, ontitles them to our respect. Their police seem to have made well organised efforta to rid the City of "desperato" characters," but we fear this has been to the disadvantage of Hong kong, for now that a deck passage from Canton to Hongkong is ob tainable on soine of the steamers for the modest sum of ton conte, this Colony is more than ever. likely to become the dumping ground of the refuse of Canton. No doubt, in the inquiries which the police are pursuing in conneo- tion with the attempted assassins tion of H. E. the Governor the police will learn a great deal. which will show the desirability or two from the Canton authori of the Government taking a hint

tica as to how to deal with men who abuse the hospitality of thes Colony by preaching within it sedition, anarchy and murder.
