the bond. The antents
is a blessing to both enuntries, and a greater blessing lies in that fact that both countrios realise its power for good. There is no necl for a formal Alliance be tween the two countries, as han boon on more than one occasion advocated, and is at present again being discussed. No Alliance. can make the feelings entertained by each country for the othor more friendly than at present, and such an alliance would. probably bring about complications tha might impodo the freedom of both countries.

Likin Barrlers.
The establishment of likin stations along the Chinese section of the line can but serve to throttle it in its infanoy. Anything more foolish than this it is hard to con- raivo. Surely the Canton Govern- ment must perceive, if it considera the subject at all, that it is highly desirable, from the point of view of its own. financial intorost, to do all that lies in its power to foster and develop traffic on this lino; and, further, that in so far as it does anything to check that devolopment it is guilty of a serious bronch of faitli with the Hongkong Government, who own the British section of the railway, and have a right to expect on the part of the Uhinoso anthorities the fullest co-operation iu fostoring the inoroase of freight traffic over the line to the mutual advantage of the joint owners We and the public at large. presume some representations have already been made on the subject both by the financial cor* poration interested in the Chinese acction of the line and by the Hongkong Government, though wo have not actually heard of any such notion having been taken. It is much too serious a matter to be ignored by oither of the in- terested parties, and we are dis- posed to think that when the matter is placed in its proper light before the Canton authorities they will recognise the force of the argumente and abolish these likin stations for ever.
