MERCHANTS

MEE CHEUNG. ART PHOTOGRAPHER HONGKONG. TELEPHONE NO. 1018,

The future eizo of batli 'mer- chant and war vessels has an im- portant bearing on the size neces- sary for canals. Mr. Corthall points out that important ship venals should be large enough to accommodate the largest vessela afloat, because even the mer- chant vessels are liable to be im- prossed into service by their

go- vernments in time of war. When it is completed two years hence, the Panama Canal will be the only slip canal with capacity to pass the greatest vessels afloat. Ita locks will take vessels nearly 110 feet wide, more than 40 feet deep and 1,100 feet long. These di mensions were insisted on by the General Naval Board of the United States after the con u'ting board and canal commission had suggested a size that has already been proved inadequate.
