Mr. Churchill and the Navy,

To pass from Mr. Churchill's attractive, personality, to his ro imarks on the British Navy and the plans of the Admiralty, it is intorosting to note, and pleasing

to observe, with what thorough ness the work of that gront Department is being conducted, Wo confess that, when we heard - of Mr. Churchill's appointment to be the Governmental loud of the Admiralty we slinrod the opinion, hald by many others, that ho might have been botter placed in some other position. It cannot be denied, however, that Mr. Churchill has justifiod the confidence reposed in him by the Premier, and that ho is undoubtedly a success in his grent post. Probably the cause of this succosa lios as inuch in the fact that Mr. Churchill has had the good souse to listen to the advice of those competent to udvise on technical points-(and, indeed, that ho has done so is evident from a passage in the aponing of the spouch referred to) as much as to thinking out for himself what is likely to be the best course for the Admiralty to adopt in the present state of affaire, and with a view to tho | future glory of our groat Empiro, whoso naval strength, we feel sure, will not suffer at the hands of the brilliant young statesman who is at present guiding its destiny.

**The Finest Site"

It is almost inconceivable to tho ordinary business man that the erection of a railing, even nl- though it has a stone foundation, should entail such an assemblago of ma'sheds and an accumulation of rubbish, as at present burdena the ground in that quarter. For- tunately His Excellency lont a sympathetic car to the emmplaint put forward by Mr. Pollock, and secondo. by Mr. Osborne, and the work of turling and laying out the site is now to be proceeded with "as soon, ne possible." It: being left to the P.W.D., with its sense of the beautiful, to supply the dofinition of this rather vague term, the Departmentul motto for the next few wooks should be. "Now we shan't be long.
