The Titanic Disaster. What really happened is a socrot now hold by the inviolate son. Did the submerged portion of the berg tear away the ship's side, ramming holos in her hull below the walor-line in addition/. to trampling up hor bows? At the very end we rend that the in-- flow of ico-cold water into the boiler rooms caused on explosion which ront the vessel in twain, so the inference is that sho did re- coivo injurios in vital parts of the hull besides the damage dono to the bows. Bat oven so, in the course of four hours was it. not possible to have found out where those damages word and to take sous alleviating precaution? The ongines wore stopped in- mediately from the bridge after the first jar, so that hardly seems to suggest that they were injured at the commencement. Another curious thing was the slightness of the jar caused by the impact with the ice. Wo can only sup- poo

mere size of the vessel and' thore is no doubt this furthor. prevented any 'sensation of imminent danger arising in the minds of those on board. To. this feoling of over-confidenco, indeed, may be attributed most of the lamentable tragedies which
subsequently occurred: Butovon so, this does not exonerato those
responsible for sanding the Titanio. to sea so inadoquately equipped f life-saving appliances. And that responsibility will be brought home. Upon tlist point we may be aurs both the British and Amor- ican Governments will see that the right thing shall be done in order that similar disasters may," if humanly possible, be avoided in the future.
Daily Press.
The Titanic Disaster. The British Board of Trado inquiry into tho disaster will be awaited with much interest. In the circumstancea of the case the inquiry conducted in America can Fouly be as Reuter describes it-
rather porfunotory, though pro- longed. The Titanic was a British ship. She foundered, not in American waters but on the high seas, and the proper authority to make inquiry into the disaster is the British Board of Trade. Why Mr. Jamay, an Englishman, after ho has given to the Senato Com- mitloe all the information in his power boaring upon the disaster, should not be allowed to return to England at will, is not obvious, nor is it at present clear that any authority in America has any legal right to dotain either Mr. Ismay or the members of the erow of the ill-fated vessel, It there is any culpability charge- able against any one of them,. they are clearly responsible only to the British authority. When all is said that is to be said as regards responsibility for the loss of the ship, and so many of the lives it carried, the memory of splendid heroism displayed by the Captain and his oraw and by tha passengers will remain indissolu- bly associated with this great and unprecedented calamity.
