With the exception of 47 small wood ves- sols, of 1,153 tone, and fivo iron vossals, of 704-tons (including one steamer of 438 tons), the ma- torial used in the construction of the whole of the tonange classed was steel.

The output of sailing tonnage, which formed 25 per cent. of the total tonnage classed in 1801 and 30 per cent, in 1892, and which had since steadily decreased, was somewhat larger for 1911 than for 1010, which latter year re corded the smallest amount of sailing tonnage ever classed in one single year by the society. The figures for 1911 include two large steel sailing vessele each of over 3,000 tons, built in Cer many. The percentage of sailing. tonnago to the total tonunge classed for 1011, 18-1.22, as against 0.2 for 1010. For the five yeara 1905-1909 the yearly average wan | 0.79 per cent.

A large number of vessels of special design were classed during the year, These comprised 24 steamers built on the longitudinal Bystem of construction, with a total tonnage of 109,113 tons, including three for the Great Lakes, of America, and one on the topside tanks system; six vessels fitted for burning liquid fuel five. steamers of the cantilevor framing and topsido tanks typer one. aleamer the Shinyo Maru, fitted withsteam turbines; twosteamers," the Orama and Demosthenes, with a combination of turbines
