If the nood (for cheap houses) is great in Singapore we believe it to be infinitely greater in Hongkong. In recent years there has been some attempt to meet it by the erection of blocks of finte st Kowloon, and we understand the rentals of these have gone up. about 25 per cent. in two years. A now block has recently been built, and it is a good indication of the need of accommodútion. for Europeans that those fists, six in number, were lot before they were completed at rentals ranging from $110 to $130 a mouth, though they are without the conveniences of a "neat little. compound and tennis court at* ¡ tached. The housing of Euro peans in Hongkong: is indeed a problem to which the serious attention of the Government and the business community should be given, for high rontal must! constitute a severe handicap to the prosperity of the Colony, At Kowloon, as woll as on the island, renta of Europesu houses are in scores of cases more than double what they were ten years ago....
