The political situation in Eng- land arising out of the coal striek is decidedly interesting. Both sidos to the controversy have ovidently girded their loins for a fight to a finish and it looks as though the sequel will be found in the dofont of the Asquith administration. towards the contentions of the employers. Mr. Asquith, afraid to put down his foot manfully and grapple with the situation, in other than a temporising fashion, thus finds himself on the horns of a dilemme, a lilemma that may in the end impale him and his party. Thi situation is but a culmination for all that has gone fuo. Ever since he first took office he has pandered, cosotted, and in somr cases truckled to, the labour party because they controlled so many votes in parliamentary elections, and now in the long last he meets his Nomenis."

The Supremacy of the Pacific,

The announcement that the-

its Philippine Squadron by sending out the three armoured cruisers which form the first division of the Pacific Fleet at. Honolulu reminds us of an in-

toresting controversy which has recently been proceeding in the columusof the Pall Mall Gazotto". respecting the question of naval. supromisoy in the Pacifio. Mr. Gerard Fionnes recently contri

|buted to that journal an article

in which he laboured to establish that the uaatory of the Pacific- will, in any event, reat with the Japanese as against the Americans in 1020; the year in which the Baito programine of SELECTION construction is intended to be. completed. Even if the American OF..

rule of laying down two armoured ships annually is not interrupted, he calculated that in 1920 Amorica would have 37 ships of the Dreadnought and pro-Drea nought type, while Japan would have 31, but he pointed out that The numerical inferiority of the Japanose is all in the loss power- fal type of ship. In other words the Japanese will, in 1920, posscAM 25 Dreadnoughtships to America's 24. On such a basis does Mr. Fiennes rest his confident state- ment that "the mastery of the Pacific will, in any event, rest with the Japanese as against the'. Amerioans in 1920,"

South China Morning Post.

Trade Outlook. Money is becoming more plon tiful. Merchants aro gradually unloading their burden of heavy stocks. Inquiries of all kinda are coming to hand more freely. Banks are giving greater facilities. It only remains for the new Government to suppress local disorders, an inevitable outcome of the initiation of now conditions of administration. Once the confidence of the people is gained, immediately the hovering bands of malcontents and trouble- makers are dispersed, and the now Government establishes

itselt as complete master of the situation, China will expe rionce such a revival as has never been known in her history,, and we can see no reason why the optimistic prediction of the first President of the Republic should not be fulfilled to the letter. The prospects are certainly encourag- ing for those who can afford to wait a little longer. China is an enormous field, hitherto only tapped at the fringe. Its recupar ntive powers are marvellous, and when business is once more set ngoing with olook like the heavy losses of tlie! months will soon be
