Suez Canal Dues

Continued reductions in the dues levied by the Suoz Canal Company seem by no means to satisfy British shipowners. Their case is set out adroitly and with just a suspicion of irony in the annual report of the Liverpool Steamship Owners Association, of which Sir Norman Hill is souro-. tary. It is pointed out that last yoar Groat. Britain received £1,129,200 in the shape of divi- donds on the shares which Lord. Boaconsfield fuckily bought for.. £4,000,000 thirty-five years ago. Altogether, the country has had £17,000,000 in dividends from those shares, apart from a hugo appreciation in the valua of its security. This extraordi- nary return, it is maintained, is the result of canal duos which exceed by 100 per cent, the cost of working the canal. As 60 pèr cent. of the dues are derived from British shipping, therefore, it is

Some little time back, when the Government was pressed on the subject, Mr. McKinnon Wood caused it to bo un 'erstood, that Ministers are more or less the victims of circumstances with regard to this Suez Canal re- venue. £600,000 of the dividends un- willingly received by the British Govorament should be applied in the gonoral relief of the British trades suffering from the tax." To British shipowners engaged in trado with the Far East and with Australia a refund of a portion of their canal dues would doubtless prove very acceptable.
