Mr. Donovan seems to have noticed that faith and hope were faculties not very well |developed, but this was not the

case with veneration, which poarod to be well to the fore in the Chinese head. “Of the so- called religious group of faculties, veneration appeared to be the loading feature, but he would" not consider them a truly reli gious people. Taking into con sideration their large concentra- tiveness, their religion, in his opinion, merely consisted of the observanco of customs; and all these customs had become

so entwined with vested interests that their observance were kept up by those whose interest it was to see that these "olo" customs were duly observed. With the Chinese custom ruled the com- muns, and the commune ruled the individual. It is rather amusing to find that the learned "phreno- logist was of opinion that "self-esteem" was a suppressed quality in the Clinase montal make-up, due to years of Manchu oppression Mr. Donovan perhaps never had the pleasure of strolling along the Queen's Road in Hong- kong or riding down the Maloo at Shanghai where the jounesse dores of Young China flaunts itsef at times, or he would soon disabuse, his mind of that idea.”
