The ponalized vessel was em ployed to carry Spanish and Portuguese inmigrants through Magellan Straits to Honolulu. Among the 1,242 passengers there wore in the eight weeks of her voyage 58 deaalis, 57 being child- ron. The births, numbered 14, The investigation farther reveal- ed that the sexes were not proper-"" ly segregated and that inadequate ventilation increased the morta=" lity. The general sanitary con dition of the vessel, including the hospital quarter, was found to be almost beyond belief.
