*Sir Henry May,

The announcement that Sir Henry May, K.C.M.G., will be re^ turning to Hongkong as Governor of the Colony has come sa a great surprise, ohiolly for the reason that it is rogarded as quite unpro... · codontod for the Imporial Govern- ment to appoint to the Governor- ship of an important Crown Co. long an officer who has spent practically the whole of his career in the service of such Colony. This departure from procodont is all the more marked in that tho Governorship of Hongkong in one of the highest paid Orown Colony · posts in the patronage of the .Colonial Offico, and for an officer who commenced his service in the Colony as a cadot to work his way steadily upward to the Governorship is very striking proof of the high valus ant upon his service by the Colonial. Office. While, on general prin ciples, there is much to be sail against appointing to the Guy- ernorship an ollicer who has been previously in the Oblony as a Civil Servant for any length of time, there is still something to be said 'in its favour, especially in connection with appointments, in the Far East where a knowledge of the langungs and custom of the countries counts for so much..

The Now Governor.

Sir Henry will be coming back amongst old friends, for he spent a long and distinguished period in the Government servico hore, so woll remembered that recapi- tulation here is quite unneces sary. Thus it is that he will.tako. up his import int offico well equip- · pod and with full cognisance of the peculian difficulties associated. with it. In that, coupled with his proven ability, may be found the reason substantially influen- cing his appointment, for it Bir Frodorick must go and wo cari- not question that Nigoris calls persistently for his skilled guid- ance and experienced control ata momentous stago in its history there is no other man so fully qualified to discharge the onerous duties of the local governorship as Sir Honry.

It is telegraphed from Taihoku [44 that those wounded in the expedi tion against the insurgent abori gines in Formosa, twenty-two in number, have reached there from. the front and entered the Taihoku hospital. It is said that, thỏ mountains in the regions where the fighting is now going on are all covered by about two feet or so of snow, and the cold is quite intense. The men are experieno ing indescribable hardships from the rugged nature of the ground 43 and we having hard fir
