LOG BOOK

New, H. A. Boat

It is authoritatively stated that the Hamburg-American Line has placed an order with S Harland and Wolf for a new steamship, which will colipse in size and magnificence the giants of tha. White Sur Lipe, the Titanic and the Olympio

The now ship will be nearly twice as long as the famous towers of the Cologne Cathedrat are high, and the height of the towers is 512 fest. The vessðl will be nearly as much longer than the now White Star ships, the Olympic and Titanic, ne those vessels are longer than .the Mauretania and the Lusitanic.

The object in making the new vessel so large is to provide luxurious accommodation rather than to sock speed. She will bo an 11-storied floating palage, will carry 5,000 passengers and will have engines of 80,000 horse power, exactly twice as powerful as those of the now. Whits. Star linera..

The deoke will be connested by three elevators, and the first- class saloons on the upper deck: will have a length of 300 feet. On the saloon deck will be the ladies' drawing room, the smok- ing room, a Ritz restaurant and⋅ big winter garden-a large, which will be filled with airy hall plants and fountains.

On the promenade deck one of the new features. will be quiet summer houses in old English rustio style for tas and coffee.

American Shipping Reform. Friends of the American sea- man, and those who have hopes of a bright future for America, as a maritims nation, are deeply interested in a bill that will be brought up before the Congress at New York for consideration.

At present many vessels are manned by incompotent lands- men, picked up on the dooks, or in the slums, and this state of affairs has led at horrible disasters. Probably more than 10,000 lives have been lost in the last few years by this cause alone and accidenta of this sort will be prevented in the future if the bill passes,- aN-- one of the main provisions of the bill requires that at least 75 par fcent. of the deck crews of steam vessels, exclusive of officers, shall be men who have had at least- three years' experience at sen, and that they shall be able to understand the English language.

New Japanoso Line, "d The new steamship service which Japanese shipowners pro Puse to inaugurato to the Bouth- Seas is to include Hongkong, Bai- gon, Shanghai, Java, Borneo, Manila, etc., excluding Calcutta; this line having already been taken over by the Nippon Yusen Kaisha without the Government subsidy, anys the Leading Light." Traffle prospects on the route do not seem so favourable as do those on the Calcutta 'route, consequently a subsidy is propos ed to be granted for the service, for which a certain amount has already been included in the Budget for next year. As neither the Nippon Yuson Kuisha nor the Osaka Shosen Kaisha scem to be interested in the project, it is ex- pected that the parties concerned are private individuals. The value of the subsidy available is said to be 160,000 per year.

Mr. E. Carleton Baker, the American Consul at Chungking, and several other foreigners there, are said to have taken; ta house boats in the river for safety. A missionary who arrived from up river recently said that two Chiness officials identified with one faction of the revolutionary government at Chungking had been killed and it was feared that their friends would retaliate. Serious disturbances, he said, were likely to ocour there and foreigners were les and occupying.
