and for a week or ten days of the month very little coal went for ward to Italian ports. Mean while market prices for coal itself advanced under pressure of the demand, so that chippers found both coals and freights at uner pected figures.

In view of those serious im- pediments to the smooth pro gress of business, it is remarkr able that the exports for Octobey should turn out so well as thea have done. The total overeer coal, amounted to 5,401,953 tons- shipments, cluding bunke, which registers an increne of 201,700 tons on October of last year. This is not so large an in- crease as some previous months of the year have recorded, but in view of all the circumstances it. must be accounted very sutiafag- |tory. For once the returns shor that this increase has been fairly well distributed over the different coal-shipping centres. The Soot tish alupments picked up to a marked extent after a period of considerable dullness, for the in- orcase which they show, 55,630 tons, is the largest of any. Next come the North-East Coast ports with an.increase of 53,777 tons, by no means so large as it would have been land the supply of ton: nage been better. The Yorkshire scom-increase is fairly largo, amounting
