Generally speaking, the condi- tion of banking business in Tokyo during the second half of the present vont in anything but satisfactory. If having boon ad- versely affected by the lingering inactivity in commercial and in- dustrial circles and by the in activity of the silk export, trado, consequent on the depreciation of the market price of tho yarns as well as the setback in the ex- port trade with China; brought Aboul by the, disturbances in control and southern China. But, on the other band, they have sustained sovero losses through the depreciation of the prices of public loan bonds and other negotiable documents, a considerable amount of which they have in their possession: 8 that, greluding some large banks with abandunt, funds to loss entailed by the deprecia tion of those bonds and certi- ficatos, the most of the Tokyo banka hayo enjoyed a very narrow margin of profits from their bank- ing business. It is said that in Bome cases the lose incurred on. Becount of the depreciation in the market prices of bonds and stocks is greater than the margin of pro- fits they natted from the main line of business. On the whole the prosent half-year was no lucrative form to the banking circles. ;

Trade in the Philippines. The following is froma Manila exchange:-

The gross Customs collections for the month of Docember, 1911, as compared with the correspond- ing month of, 1910 show quite a big decrease for the porta of Manila, Iloilo and Coba,

In 1910 the grosa collections for December at Manila was 81,470,700.91 us against $1,- 055,717.05 of this year, decrease of $414,992.80. For the port of Iloilo the deeronse is very slight. Gross collections in 1910 ware $130,08164 com- pared with $120,298.50 for this year; a decrease of but $780.14. Cebu, however, took a big drop, in December, 1910, the gross col- lactions at that port amounted to $172,341.46 while this year only $70,253,00 was taken in, a decrease of $102,088.36.

Collections for the sullor porte of the Philippines had not boen received yesterday at the Bureau of Customs, but it is presumed that they also will show a decrease.

Statistical information from Brazil és to the movement, of rubber during the first ning motillas of 1911 shows, although rubber exported has increased a little, its value has fallen off by £8,333,000, or 45 per cent. This loss has been about moouped by.
