The "Nippon says that the bulk of foreign trade at the end of November was over 883,000,000 yon, showing the increase of 46,000,000 yen as compared with the amount experienced in the corresponding period of last year. Of this, the imports have increas ad by 61,600,000 yen in compari- son with last year, while the exports have decreased by 10,800,000 yen. The excess of imports has amounted to over 65,700,000 yen, the specie currency exported amounting to -21,700,000 yen. The phonoinena are totally disheartening, especially because it is Japan's weak point that the specio reservò abroad is always on the decrease, The journal further observos that the increase of trade amounting 40,000,000 yen this year is chief- ly due to the increase of imports anticipatory of the revised tariff and in the optimistio forecasts as to the financial condition of the country that were made at the beginning of the year.. Of the anticipatory imports, machi neries of various kinds are the foremost in amount, or 23,400,000 van at the end of November, and the increase in this category as compared with last year being over 10,000,000 yon. There was also an increuse of about the same amount in iron goods. As to exports, all articles have fallen, with the exception of raw silk, which increased by about 800,000 you. Of course, this

largely due to the generat depression, of the world's markets, but-is cannot be denied that the evil lies in the ever increasing. tendency of the cost of produc- tion in this country.:
