FAMOUS POISONER.

Terrible End of Iáfamous Parisian

Woman.

Ons of the most interesting memoirs recently publishod is "Madamo do Brinvilliers. Her Life and Times," by Hugh Stokes. Dur ing the seventeenth century a per- foot orgy of murder was carried on, especially in Italy and France, among the most highly placed, and no name is so infamous in that connection as that of Mme. de Brinvilliers, Two thingsraised her to a special plans of infamy among the merciless wretches who prac- tised the art of the Medici and the Borgis. Her girlish beauty and the winning gentleness of her man- 'ners made the licentious life and hideouscruelty of the woman more revolting when the truth was known, and humanity has further

·revolted' st a callousness which made her father and her brothers, and the sick poor in the hospitals, ita victims.

When Madame de Briuvilliers first took up the poisoner's craft, she practised on the patients in the Hotel Dieu, that great public hospital of Paris, which stands to day, where it has stood since its foundation, between the Cathe- "dralofNotre Damoand the Palaco of Justice. Here many of the ladies of Franco came to visit the sick, and among them Mimą,' de Briviliors flitro:] like a bird of qvil omen. Upon the unfortunato pá- tient she experiments recretly. but fooly. She brought and ad- ministered sweets, wino, and big- cuits, all ourofully prepared with Glaser's receipt or the powder of succession-soitincalled, boonuso loira who had waited too long founditsingularly useful in bring- ing them to their own. Patients who received gifts from her hands invariably died in the greatest agony. Nobody seems to have de tooted hor. Medical science had|· ́ not advanced to any state of ex- actitude. The hospital was un- darstaffed, and nearly all hospitals are. But the mortality must have been extremely high, and Madame de Brinvilliers was not the only the experimentalist, although otherý were working for the good motive and not for the bail:

Ju the Torture Chamber. At the same time she was exper rimenting upon the bodies of her own servants. She gave one of her maids, Francoise Roussel, some preserved gooseberries on tho point of a knife. Soon after the girl had a light attack of illness, Then her mistress give her a slice of ham, and the maid became ra pidly worse. She felt as though her heart was being stabbed, and ého did not recover for three years. In the latter part of the book which deals in dotail with the trial, torture, and execution of the Marquise, we have a faithful pic- ture of the methode of jurispru dence and panel practice of an. age as savage as it was splendid, Mme. de Brinvilliers spent seven days in the torture chamber, dur- ing which time she underwent, to the fullest extent, the famous "water torture,”
