SLAVERY IN CANTON.

Extra Wives for Rich Chinese./

Cantonese aristocrncy ikollicial. There is nothing in the system to prevent a simple possint from becoming viceroy. Until recent- ly entrance into and progo- tion in official life was by com- petitive examination. Pripes of the Manchu dynasty uro, of course, the real bloodad avistourney of Chira But there are not enough of them to go round, and outside of Jeking they exert little in- Tudno in social life. Whilo there are no water-tight ebony partments in Cantonese society, it possible to distinguish cortaju asso. I proposojo show, with is help givonne by our Consul, Bays a correspondent of the "Chicago Tribuno," how typical) families of theso different dlosses: live, especially tooking into their living exponses and incidentally -into-tho-stracture of family life in

Canton.

Taking the aristocrație official class first, you will find in a typical. family six individuals-husband and wife, two otlier women and Awo children,

Their monthly household 'ex-| punson would be about as follows:

Rent for a house valued at $20,000, $130; aleven mien sor- vants, including one porter, fourt general sorrants, a cook, assistant cook, and four chair coolies, $74. Thorn will, bn såven wotron ser- vants, at i total cost of $35.50, comprising two women's muidant $3 eh, two babies' nurses ut 88, mud deen gonoral servants, who also so the family washing, at $2.50 each.

The food for the family would onst $150 a month. The mastor and three wives have four meals n day, Breakfast 50 cents, luncheon 25 conts, dinner 75 cents, supper 50, conta, The two meals for the servants cost 25 conte a day. To this must be added rico to the value of §16,50, and $11: for firewood and suviry expenses.

Extra Wives

The two exit wires are practi- ally velares. If they, bear, no Loliildren they live no legal status;

they bear childron, their posi. Jon in the family is, assured. They are subject to the urders of the first wife; their children are considered her children and sub- Geot to her direction.

As there always is a steady exodus of men from Canton, the population numbers more women than men. Tho law does not! Bauation, but, on the contrary, actually forbids plurality of wives. A Chinaman may have but one wife; there is no limit to the number of concubinod ho may have. The wife is chosen from the same rank and position in life as that of her husband.

"And you must take Sanatogen regularly for several weeks"

„This urgent advice is, given by physicians every day, in every civilised country, to sufferers from Nervous Debility, Brain-fog, Lack of Vitality, Sleeplessness, Disordre Digestion," Poverty of 'Blood and various Wating Diseases.

Physicians know that Sanatogen is a true scientific compound of organic phosphorns and pure coucen. trated proteid, forming a new substance which is carly and completely absorbed by the tissues and -postesses unique tonic-aud reconstructive-qualities.

The Supreme Restorative.

Physicinus can speak from experience of the great recuperative effects which Sanatogen has upon, the brain, nerves, blood and muscles, They have watched its revivifying' action upon people whose nervous strength has been depleted by over-work, worry or ditzuse. They have noted how Sanatogen gives :- dating, bencft, how it regenerates the appetite and

igation, brings back the bloom to the check,. replaces wakeful nights by sound refreshing sleep— in stort, en ibles the ḥuinan machinery to perform its functions - so perfectly that the patient loses his depression of spirits; gaius confidence and courage, ant finds life again worth living.

Fighting Malaria and Dysentery.

Apart from its value as a general tonic, Sanato- gen is of the greatest pervice to the physician in fghting Malaria, Dysentery and other Bourges of tropical climates.

On this subject, Dr. H. H. W. H., of Babu- gh, United Provinces, writes!" I have much pleasure in certifying to the value of Sanalogen in cases of Dysentery,~~ Enteric,” Fever and other exhausting diseases, I have used'it regularly in my practice for the past two years, and in no single instance have been

disappointed with its results. I can honestly

afiam that many of my worst cases owe their recovery to Sanatogen."

Try Sanatogen To-day.

As the head offices of the manufacturers of Sauatogen ibere ns. Gled more than fourteen thousand letters from practising

- plynicians who certify to the value of Sauatogen."'" Truly s 1. magnificent monument to the value of this unique tonic-food i Duto less impressive is the enthusiastic testimony of patients themselves. Thousands of well-known people in every walk of life have publicly testified to the wonderful benefits they have received from Sanatogen, and a few of their letters are reproduced here,
