Salving of the 'Lutino"

The latest attempts at selving the treasure in H.M.S. Lutine, a 36-gua frigate, which was wreck- ed, off the island of Vlieland on October 9, 1799, appear to have met with considerable success. The frigate was on her way to Homburg freighted with gold and silver bars and coin of the total value of £1,200,000, of which £140,000 was for the payment of the King's troops, then stationed `on the island of Texel, tlie balance being to relieve the merchants of Hamburg, who were financially, embarrassed owing to the do- pression of the monoy market onused by the wars.

Last year the National Salvage Association (Limited) decided to Bond their powerful salvage steamer Lyons to remove the 30ft. of sand-which-then-covered tho Latine.
