It would seem that Russia is anni- fosting noro interest in Mongolia than lior commercial needsaclunl. ly domand. The arrival at Urga the other day of three hundred "Consular guards" is naturally regarded by the Chinese with some suspicion, oupecially in viow of the ruinour that one thousand

that pleasure very strongly. Wo liked to think of the room in darkness, and our book held in the midst of a pool of pure, woft light. In part this solemo was a succoss. We got the rest of the room in darkness with ease; but something was wrong with the pool of pura, soft. light. What we moan is that the reading lamp absolutely failed to illuming the volume. The candle -it was one of those lamps which have a candle-was alight; the printed page, however, was: shrouded by impenetrable dark 11889. We spent hours * (Chat should have been spent in com- mune with the great brains of the past) tracking the dim spot that em mato from our read- ing-lamp. We hunto l'high ind low for it. At last we located it on the well just over the top of the clock on the mantelpiece. We moved the lamp an inch and the fight sprang up and settled on the dado near the door. That was enough for one night.. We thanked our roading lamp for. its kind performance and sur rendered. There is something peculiar in our reading lamp. It is unlike any other. The reading lamps of other people offor no difficulties. Subsequently we are afraid that we manhandled bur lamp prolty severely. But it had its revongo. Waiting until we wote not looking, it released its spring and shot its candle at us with terrific force, and we own ourselves locky in escaping with aflah wou d--" The Globe."
