Canton's Recent Loans. The defence put forward is to the point and certainly deals with
the facts known to oxist in a dis
passionate way. On the other hand, there is a note of pessimism running through the explanations. Again and again the words occur that funds are not sufficient to neot this call or that, and sourcos of taxation that were supposed to realise certain sums live not reached the estimates; in some cases the deficit appears to be con- sidorable. What is remarkable,
& CLEANDO however, is that. His Excellency should publicly defend his action before the Provincial Assembly

prosperity in the Colony ? Morchants and the shipping com- panies, however, appear to have great difficulty in recognising ||ilio year
1910 as one of
mproved prosperity for the Jolony, and the inference, there foro, is that this increase of trado through Hongkong noted by the Statistical Secretary of the Chinese Maritime Customs, though it night suggest a reason for the tucreased tonnage calling at the port,
does not necessarily mean that a larger trade was done here, and more cargo handled in the harbour. In the section of the Harbour Master's Roport dealing with Trade, Commander L'aylor tella U18 that the otal reported Imports in 1910 .showed an increase of 24 per cont., and Exports an increase of 102 per cent,, while transit cargo showed a decrease of 0.3 per cent.; but, as ho says, these figures are not roliable, because in the absence of a Customs Staff there aro' no means of collecting accurato information. Therefore, itromains for those who deny that the Colony's trade is prosporing explain away all these statistics, which prima facie are evidence to the contrary.

South China Morning Post,
Hongkong Scores a Record. The report on the trade and shipping of Hongkong for the your-1010, --- just published, is most gratifying reading. His Excellency the Governor hinted some weeks ago that the colony's shipping had exceeded all pre- vious records, and upon a study of the Harbour Master's re- port, laid upon the table at yes- terday's meeting of the Legisla tive Council, we find that the prog- nostication is amply verified. The totals of the shipping en- tering and clearing are by fur the largest yet recorded, exceed- ing the previous highest returna by 10,052 vessele and 500,051 tons. To the average indivi- dual who viowe the shipping in idle contemplation from the waterfront, the figures presented by the Harbour Master must be startling Vessels totalling 547,164 in number and aggregat ing 36,534,361 tons entered and cleared, an inorenzo, when com« pared with the previous year, of 119,804 rossola amdi 1,708,610 tons,
