Japanese Purchasing Ships. Since last untamn the Japanese have purchased no fewer than 20 foreign steamers, aggregating 2 70,000 tons, but the reason for this houvy buying lies in the facts that an increased tariff on foreign- built ships comes into fores July 17. Negotiations for the transfer of 15 more ships, with e total tonnage of 12,000, havo been completed and the sale of six othors is pending and is expected before the new tariff is enforced. The prices range from 40 yen to 50 you per ton.
