THE GULF EXPEDITION.

A GREAT MISTAKE AT DUBAI.

Karachi, April 8th.-A Porsian Gulf correspondent writes to the Siud Gazotto se follows: “The Dubai incident has dono more harm than good to British prestigo in these parta. The Arab --otherwise a good and hospitable friend-onco offended, is hard to reconcile. It is stated it was only through intervention of the Sheik of Dubai that the totalslaughter of the entire landing party from H. M. S. "Hyacinth” ́ wás averted. found in tho houso it was con- sidored a great insult. “The poo- plo add that the rifles handed over were collected from those allowed to import arms under treaty, and fat it was under great pros

re and threat of bombard-. ment of the town that Rs. 50,000 were paid down. The Arabs now will have nothing to do with nny- thing British. They do not allow any European to land at Dubai who may represent any British company's interests.

"As the outlook is ominous, Colonel Cox hus deemed it necess sary to revisit those parts, and it is only he who can conciliate the Arab and make a friend of him. again. Although they refused to take back the money they paid, groat things are expected from the Residont's-visit- and there is no doubt that the special tact, con- bined with the affability of Colonel Cox, will stand him in good stond at this difficult moment.

some are alrendy approaching the Southern coast of Eastern Persin. Only lately four Afghans, disguised as dervishes, arrived at Bünder Abbas from the interior, but were at once detected by the Indian polico on special duty and dily deported to Karachi. They were reported to have been spies. sont in advance, and more gangs are expected to arrive in due time. The British Consulate at Bunder Abbas has been put in a thorough defensive state to repulso any at tack from the gut-runners who aro reported to bo marching down- wards through Eastern Persia.

"It is rumoured that HM.S. "Porsous" pursued two "dhewe laden with arms, and finding they were hard pressed they ran into the harbour of Kishim Island, where a man-of-war is kooping them under closo surveillance, and will soon effect their capture. During the summer months of last year the vigilance of the Eastern aquadron. in the Persian Gulf slackened a bit, and, owing to the oxcessive heat, some of the ships left for. Indis, but this year every ship's crow will have in stand to their guns, as the gun- runners are becoming active."
