THE CORONATION.

It is much to be regrotted that the skeleton programme of the Coronation fostivities which the committee submitted for the up- 981] proval of the public meeting on Tuesday was not previously ad- vortised. We share the opinion of the correspondent whose letter wo publish to day when he says the programmo hordlyses to bo an idoal one, and it is satisfactory to seo that though the programno was approved by the public meet- ing, which doubtless through being inadequately advertised was attended by not more than fifty persons, suggestion for its improvement aro still wol=:: comed by the commitlco. · Tho writer of the leitor which appears in another column to-day offers some valuable suggestions that the Committee might with ad- vantage take into consideration. We cannot believe that the Cora- nation will be celebrated in Hongkong without a Naval and Military display of some kind, and it is disappointing to find that the Committee which has boon deliberating for weeks past on a scheme of colebrations wan not able to submit to the public mesting a programme showing that the co-operation of the Naval and Military authorities had already been enlisted:

South China Morning ›Puit,

HONGKONG AND THE CORONATION."

A review of the sister services

is an ossoatial constituent of the atmosphoro of Imperialism which will porvade the three days. For our own part, therefore, wo sug- gest that, aftor the daily special sorvicos lave been hold, there should bo a naval review on tho first day and a military review on the second day; while the third day should be given up to fotos for all classes of the community. We regret of course any inconvori- onco that the services may feel in connection with the suggestod reviews; but, if there is any ques tion of the Coronation reviews clashing with that fixed for the Royal Birthday, wo have no hesita tion in saying that the intter should be abandoned. Coronation day is obviously a day of pageantry and one inseparable from naval and military trappings; and really, it' should not be too much to expect His Excellenoy to soo that the services fulfil their obligation to the Orown as well as to the community, on such an occasioni,
