A VETERAN SHIPMASTER

We regret to announco tho death of Captain 1. Y. Powles, of Liverpool. He received his train- ing on board the schqoi-shijk Con way in the Morsey, and apprenticed in the sailing, "alig Lancaster in 1861. He became second mate of that vessel in 1805k When only 23 years of age he was appointed to command the Princo Osear, of the Graves Line, and continuod in Mr. Graves' sorvico vátil 1879. He commundod several of Messrs. J. H. Boazloy and Co.'s ships, Whon that firm and some of the finost vessels sail- ing out of Liverpool. I 1892 Captain Powles was appointed to -the-command-of-the steel-four- mastod barque Jamos Korr, 2,420-· tons, built in that year. le re tired from the soa in 1901. In. all his long career hu novor lost a rossel nor had a serious mishap.: For many years he was a promine ont member of the Mercantilo Marine-Service Association.

THE FIRST LORD'S MISTAKE.
