The position seems 10 bave arises due to the fact that the British Consul took no steps to preserve the Chefoo Convention, The monopoly was given to a certain Chloese who immediately put on a duty of 30 dollars a chest. It is certainly not in the interest of checking con. sumption, in the nicely and astute device lúr forcing down the price of the ladino opium is the interests alone of the monopolist. It is absurd to think that any sentimeniel forces wil be roused in Great Britsic or India by the ib. sistence on the part of the Imperial Government of a scrupulous observation of the terms of the Convention. We have met China baudsomely in her alleged eft it to suppress the est cl opium by her people, but this certainly cannot go the legit of an ichingement of treaty lights which would only have the effect, of injuring those legitimately engaged in ibe trade. -fa previous reports we have called: attention to the necessity of wide planting as the most important factor in the annual increment of growth of rubber trees. Such increment, wa consider, should not be lots, for the average of an ostale, than two inches per annum between- the third and thirtieth years.

The facrement of growth of park trees is variable according to situation, soil, humidity; but the ratio of lacrament also varies accórdiar to the age of the tree.

We would estimate the ratio of growth whore the general conditions are fale as follows From 5 to 15 years 3 to 4 inches per goouth.

1520

11

The normal facrament of growth, however,

may be modified in any paricular year through prolific sneding. It has been sicariained with oaks and beaches in temperate countries that the annual concentric ring of new wood may ba redaçed-as much as 50 per cent, as a resolt: of heavy`saeding.

CHECKING THE GROWTH,

· There is a far more important cause, which

•hecks the cormal growth of Para ireis when overcrowded. With troos In‘general there la usually some excess of food amimilated which gradually accumulates until exhausted or, dia- posed of by a heavy crop of seeds; but is rubbar frees regularly tapped, the plant food formed by the tree has not only to provide the formative

substance of a seed crop-as wall 'as fod nutriment for the cambium,cone, but it has also to farish material for new cell walls which are in regularly formed as tapping proceeds. To meet this extra demand wall developed trees with of abundance of leaver-really manufacturing ors

Daro necessary, but as a consequence of overcrowding and the resulting struggle for ex- stence a small crest of leaves manages to resch the light and such diminishad organs are in«- capable of elaborating the necessary food. - -

A Para tres always contains a minimum apply of latex and the loss sustained by tap ping-s comprosated for by an ipcreased intake and stowage of water which gradually affecta the colour and volume of latex axuded, and although there is shrinkage or loss of waight in proportion to volume such lors lu more than compensated for in the increased volume of latex. We would add that, fp our opinion, coloured rubber is the strongest, ;

DANGER OF CLOSE PLANTING, DISNEY The progress or condition of an untaint should not be considered from the view of yiold: of later, ak this may be good long as the bark lasts and, quick, bark; reseWAL can only be effected when the increment of growth is satisfactory. Overcrowded trees ATM the first to suffer. The cambium zonala of some luches, the annual concentric ring In scarcely perceptible and bark ranewal la not only slow but the new bark is thlo and very slightly latex bearing. How far prowth may- be checked, or rather the farming extant to

which growth may be checked, is shown by the following figuras-ip whichỉ thías closely and co widely planted are compared,. The closely planted trees are now 24 years ́old planted on triangular place of ground measuring: RA
