He made no secrat of the fact that, unless the Chinese surrender by 1 p.m. to-day, a naval contingent will be land- ed by the gunboat Patris, who will co-operate with the land, forces and march agafest the Chinese. The plan is to abeil their fortified positions. It is hoped that the demonstration of force alone will convince the Chinese of the futility of hopeless resistance and that they will yield to the inevitable situation without a resort to physical force which may be at tended by painfully disastrous consèquences.

Naval Gordon Broken Up. The threatened appearance of the weather coupled with the ominously falling barometer and the heavy swell in, the roadstead have led to the breaking up of the Naval Cordon, and as I write the units of the Chinese flotilla are forming loto line heading for the inner barbour of Macao. The pirates have thus conspired with the clark of the weather to afford them their fast means of escape from their lais. The state of the weather will probably determine the abandonment lo- morrow of the contemplated renewed assault on the last of their strongholds, the necessity for which will have gone by their escaps on account of the threatened storm which has driven the mesquita flotilla into shelter.
