at a price of $17,000, and notwubsbanding the high figure asked for the laud, the Committee decided to mate's bid for it. With this end in view, a public meeting was held, presided over by H.E. Sir Frederick Lugard. At that meet Ing Mr. (now Sir) Hormusjes N. Mody made the announcementbatin view of beimportant work done by the Seamen's Mission in the Colony he was willing to make a donation of $35,000 towards the building, provided, that a suitable site could be obtained. Needless to say, this generous offer was cordially accepted. Public subscriptions were invited, and the amous necessary for purchasing the site was speedily zalend. The preparation of the p'aus was entrusted to Me Letel and Orange, architects, by whom were sub.mitted designs for a substantial three-torey budding..
When tenders ware iovied for the building It was found that the lowest wax $50,000, but, the Commitice were relieved from their pre- dicament by the further maificence of Sit Horrnusje Mody, who added $15,000 to his already magnißcept gift on the understanding that the furnishing of the building should be 'carried out by means of public subscription; And Hongkong now can boast of the possession of a Seamen't Instituce well worthy of the Colony's position and importance as a shipping port and a naval base,
