SOUDAN.
WILES OF THE DEALERS IN HUMAN FLESH. Some remarkable facts about the existence in the Soudan at the present moment of two routes on which the slave traffic is still treely carried on were given by Dr. Kar! Kumon in a lecture to the Royal Geogrphical Society last month, rolating bis experiences in an adventu. rous journey from the Niger to the Nile.
Dr. Kumm left Liverpool on 10% Dol., 1908, and after establishing a freed slaves' home at Rumasha, in Northern Nigeria, teft. Yola, the last British port in Northern Nigeris, en route for the Nile, on 17 March, last year.
Following, roughly speaking, the border line between Mahometanism and 'pagamism in the Sundan, he traversed hitherto unexplored coun- try reaching Khartoum on 3 Déc., his caravan bi 200 persoas having suflared considerably through famins and sickness. On the journey he found large deposits of copper and on one of the tribularies of the Benue, gold,
OPEN DEALING IN SLAVES.
Di. Kamm stated that there are to this day two routes still in use in the Soudan on which slave traffic is carried on quite freely. The traific on one roulo, as the road is dominated at certain points by European Government officials, is carried on in an underhand way by smuggling the slaves past the Govarament posts. While amnggling the slaves past the Government posts the trader maintains that the women are ble, wives and the children bis owa offspring, his difficulty sometimes consisting, in the children not spacklog the language of the supposed parent..
The French Government have liberated a large number of these slaves, and the Governor of that country but decided to open a Govern ment station in the neighbourhood of the Anglo-Egyptian frontier, probably at Nim Adal. Dr. Kumm said it would seem advisable to establish a British post at Min Gola to co operate with the representatives of the French Government in the closing of that slave soute, The second route has never been traversed before. by a white man, and until Darfur is' accupied slaves would continue t; be traded from that country.
►
PIETY AND SLAVERY. Declaring that the Mecca pitguages of the Moslems has bad, and will continue to have, a permaneat influence on the sociological conditions of the Soudan, Dr. Kumm mention.. ed that a caravan leaving Timbuctoo, in the Western Soudan, would probably be a year to a year and a half on the road. "A consider abls number of old men, women, and children were in the caravans, and practically all dropped out on the road. They died or wate sold, the boys and young woman being alaves, who were taken as easily transported coindge to Mecca, where they were turned into 'ready A caravan, headed by the eldest son of the Sultan of Timbuctoo, started with some 500 bead of cattle, 50 dankeys, 15 horses, and igo. people. When Dr. Kumm saw him again he was in a starving condition. He had lost two thirds of bis people, all his cattle, and all his doaksys.
