* THE DALAI LAMA.

VISIT TO VICEROY:

There was a very impressive ceremony at Government House on Monday morning when Mr. Bell, Political Offices and six ribeter His Holiness the Dalai Lama accompanied by. Ministers paid a formal visit to His Excellency the Viceroy. Punctually at at am., the appoint. ed time, the cortage of the Lama, escorted by detachment of the Bengal Cavalry reached the Government House where at the foot of the grand staircase His Holiness was received by Captain Gibb, A.D.C. to the Viceroy, and on the landing by Mr. Harcourt Butler, Secretary, Foreiga Department. Upon the arrival of His Holiness a salate was fired and the Guard of Honour furnished by the 88th Carnatice pre- seated arms. His Excellency at the head of bis, staff received His Holiness at the entrance of the throne room and escorted him to the golden throne and sat the Lama on his right. On the right of His Excellency, sit the six Tibetan Ministers dressed in vermillian robe. reaching to the hast and presented a bright contrast to the simple white uniform of the Viceroy's Staff who sat on his lols. Among there were Mr. Butler, Foreign Secretary,

Colonel Pinbey, Lieutenant-Colonel Croke Lawless, Lieutenant Colonal Victor Brooke, Captains Lord Francis Scott, Mair and Gibb, The Viceroy bad a short interview with the Lama and inquired about his health. His Excellency also anked him if His Holiness and suffered much on the journey.
