- TUJE SPITTING SUISANCE.

Some time ago, as the result of the campaign started by the Sanitary Department in the cause of cleanliness, the Police authorities sud- denly became imbued with a consuming desire to maintain the premises of the local Police Courts in a fii sanitary state. For this purpose they caused to be placed in the verandahs "out- side the Court-room, where all manner of people are wont to congregate every day, a bumber cuspidora with notice that those who desired to get rid of their phlegm should refrain from expectorating on the flagstone and kindly deposit the superfluous matter in the receptacle provided for the purpose. To provide against possible contingencies, the spitoons were actually fixed to the walls." WAS bigbly This wholesome lanovation admired at the time it was introduced but a change has come over the authorities: The spitting crusade seems to have died & natural death. (Sanitary Board please note) Such a thing as a spittoon is now at extinct as the dodo and visitors to the Magistracy are treated to the edifying sight of side channels lined with expectoration. THE NEW PLADSHIP.

The booming of guns early on Monday morning signified the arrival in these waters of the new flagship of the China Squadron with Admirat Winsloe on board. The new flagship marks a unique period in the Colony's naval defence scheme, as the Minotaur in the

THE AMERICAN TOURISTS. The appearance of a goodly number of Americaar in our mida these last thres days imparted a decided fillip to the atmosphere of Queen's Road. The true American is nothing if not unconventional and it was scarcely remarkable to 500 some of the elderly demas ensconced os various projections from the walls of buildings to allow them to snatch a breath after landing from the ship. Such blissful disregard of the dictates of rigid convention is indeed refreshing to behold. On the occasion of the visit of the last party of tourists, the sanguine expectations of local shop-keeperste realise a modest fortune sustained a rude shock when they made the discovery that the general inclination of the alleged curio-hunters was in the direction of turning the establishments almost inside out and then departing with, an insignificant pur- chase. Doubtless the shop-keepers must have thought their visitors were regular curios them- selves. I wonder if John's unenviable experi ences have been repeated this time? I am given to understand that the visitors who des parted yesterday were a better crowd thad the last batch from the point of view of shop keepers, as judge from the remark one of them made to me: "This time blong more better," Really, 'there is no denying that the Americans...aro a

DEATH OF CAPT. L. PETERSEN. year's business in particular, our prospects

AN OLD JAPAN RESIDENT.

We regret to record the death of Captain Lorenz Petersen, for several years a resident of Kobs, and whose total residence in Japan extended over some thirty years. Captain Petersen first came to this country in command of a sailing-ship, and for some years was en- gaged in sealing and whaling in the north. About twelve years ago be returned to Europe, bat came back to Japan about two years later, and joined the firm of Nickel & Co., with whom be remained until, the end of last year, when he resigned, intending to go whaling again.

About the end of January Captain Petersen' went to Yokohama to make arrugements for hle proposed cruise, but a long standing though previously not serious affection of the heart be- come more pronounced, and he entered the Yokohama. Hospital about a fortnight ago where he died yesterday, 9th just, after a very short illness—Japan Chronicle, THIS year has been an excellent year in teak, in so far as Sium is concerned. are quite good. Ŭur maka is a universal favourite with engineers, and continues to grow in favour with everyosie who tries, it, We have now a good market for it all over China, the Philippines and the Straits, and if we were ever pushed for more outlets wo could we know find them still farther afield, but at present it seems that we have quite enough to do with the places i have named and our own local market which have exsily taken all wa could turn out. For the moment our prospects are all that we could wish, we have sold to date more than we did this time last year, and we have just closed a contract for nighty. thou

There being no questions, The Chairman moved the adoption of the report and accounts.

+

Mr. T. F. Hough :~Having already received the report and accounts and having heard what our Chairman had said, there is very little for me to add except to tender a mead of praise to the general managers on the way they have handled the affairs of the company under ex ceptional circumstances. With those fow remarks I have pleasure in seconding the adoption of the report and accounta

The mailoo wsa cazzled unanimously,

A simple, unaffected, kindly gentleman, and a tolerant, broadminded man of the world, Mr. McKie was also a Scotchman of no in tensely patriotic typs, intimately familiar with the proud, romantic history of his astive country and thoroughly lalared with its chivalric, generous spirit. That his fon character was thoroughly appreciated by his fellow Scotimmen was evidenced by the honours with which they dallghted in 'loading him when. ever occasion offered, chief among which may be mentioned the coveted Presidency of the St. Andrew's Society which he held some five years ago. But esteem and affection for Mr. McKie ware not by any means confined to the Scotch people in the community. He commanded the respect and love of all sections of our cosmopoll tan population and he certainly deserved all the honour in which he was held--for a stauncha, kinder, more generous friend in time of need, a finer example of all that is lofty and com mendabla in Scotlsh character, never walked the Shangbai Bund than Mr. James McKis. He had no relatives in the East but he has an early schoolmate and a lifelong friend hare, Me: W. C. Murray, to whom, as well as to the members of My, McKie's firm, the condolences of the community may bo tendered 10-day with truth and propriety,

FREIGHT, MARKET.

Messrs. Lamke and Rogge write in . their eight circular of 19th inst The geustal tone of the freight market, especially in the South, is a decidedly better one, a fair amount of business, in the way of time-chartering has been done during the interval under review, and at the close a scarcity of tonnage is making liself falt, Several good paying froights are left untouched, yet there being no steady demand for any partl cular trade, rates of freight in some directions are belag prevented from advancing to a fair level, Saigon/Hongkong:-The local rice marksi has been very quiet, from Saigon to this only some few fixtures have been done at between 14 and 16 cents per picul, small and medium. size, whilst larger boats have altogether been neglected.

During last week there was no special de- mand, for prompt loading, whereas inquiries after prompt tonnage from Bangkok have. reached this market, resulting in the fixture of s'medium-sized vessel as 27/20 cents, allowing some downward cargofree of charge. It is a note worthy feature that after a very idag interval Bangkok is again in the field for outside tonnage. The Chino-Siamess line bave taken up a farther boat on time-charter, the Gorman se, Landrat Schelf, The new Bangkok cropis reported to be as exceptionally good one, and it is to be hoped that the two rivals on the regular run will not only find sufficient and profitable employment for their boais, but that ibe market will also allow further outside ton- Dage being placed at better rates.

Shigon/Java :~A fixture has been put through locally at last rate paid.

To carry stones from Quangyes two steamers hare bean chartered at $1,80 per ton.

The North-There is also more demand for tonnage in various directions up Noth, ratos have stiffened and everything "points to some improvement soon.

it is reported that the port of Newchwang will re-open about the 24th lustent.

Coal Freights-Fixtures bavo been done as follows: Wakamaten/Canton Sago, Moji Hongkong $1.80, Hoogay/Canton $1.80 per ton. Tonnage to load from Japan is being eagerly Inquired for, but even at much enhanced-rates charterers find it impossible to secure any,

Time-charters.There was a sudden strong demand for handy-sized bosta and again several vassals found employment on time-charter, most of them intended for southern trade, Rates obtained in most instances must be con sidered very satisfactory.
