'SHANGHAI TAKEN BY BURPRISE,

The news which came to hand on Saturday morning of a drop lathe price of silver of the of a peany, took this market by surprise, says the N. C. D. News. The steady and gradual im provement which has for some time characteriz. ed the price of the white metal was looked upon all the beginning of a movement towards higher range. Merchants and bankers alika were unprepared for such violent selback,, and exchange did not at first respond to the fall On a very unsettled market a large business wa done by importers · which the Banks could not stand up to, and rates slid away quickly antil a drop of a half. pancy was recorded. At that point the sagging tendency was arrested. We gather from the telegrama that the reason for the slamp in silver is the announcement in the Indian Budget proposals for the sosuing year that the duty on bar allvar imported will be increas- to an advance of about eleven per cent on the present tariff of five per cent, l'he secret has besu wall kept, as nope of the Banks or houses trading with India seems to have expected any alteration. We understand that, private tala grams have been received here to the affect that the new duty is being imposed already.. ́A shipment of £450,000 was due to arrive in Bom bay last Friday and whether it was landed s time to escape the higher duty is uncertain, but there must beother'shipinouts en route. It is not likely that the Indian bazaars and bullion dont- ors will submit to the imposition of the higher tariff without protest, particularly with to silver ou the sea. It is a pity, however, that the price has received, such a shake at the pre- sent time, when merchants here were hoping for a steady market and soms signs of a retoro to prosperous time. Prices will no doubt adjust themselves in time, but factuations of this -nature 'murs have an adverse effect. The fall in silver will be recovered, although the process may be slow. Local conditions indicate that China is likely to be a buyer and lodía must bay silver whather the day be 5 or 15. per

cent.

regard

Since the issue of our last report, dated the seth altimo, par 1.6. Assaye, there has been great activity in our market, the anticipations of the dealers, of a brisk demand after the New Year holidays, boog amply falfilled. Prices, a compared with our last quotations, þave ad. vanced 52 to 55 per bale," This big advance may be attributed, firstly, to the sudden fall in the rupee rate, and secondly, to the natural desire of the dealery to establish higher prices, in order to reap the full besaßt oftheir previous, beavy purchases. It is worthy of note, however, that to spite of the steady advance which in taking place under their very noso, some dealers are still holding aloof from the market, assorting, as mentioned in our last, that prices are dangerously high.
