This was undoubtedly the bright nucleus or head of the comet, as I had obferved the 'saine. traet of the sky a few weeks ago, sud no other bright star save the two planets had been visibla.. I got no glimpse of the tall until wenty-five minutes past five, when it ap

peared as a faintly. luminous wab of extreme tenuity. It seemed to flash upon the vision all at once, and in spite of its transparent, faintness was quite perceptible, no doubt, by reason of the great number of the retinal cones of the eye that it affected simultaneously. By a quar. ter to six thp comes was a brilliant object, tail and head being outlined with great clearness. At six o'clock it sank behind a bank of mist, ́and was seen no more.
