Astronomer-Royal at the Cape. From his flat in Kensington he takes a wider purview of the heavens than most Londooars, but the skies are leaden, and the new comet has bot yet shown' itself to the veteran astronomer. Sir David Gill will not scientifically observa and examina it. "I leave that to younger man," he said yesterday.
BIR DAVID GILL'S THEORIES. The new comat interests Sir David Gill more particularly because-it is a “daylight "comet.
"Daylight comets are exceedingly raro," said Sir David Gili yesterday. Very low are mentioned in history, though Halloy's comet Lon one of its appearances is said to have been
a daylight comet.
The most remarakble of all daylight comets, was that of 1881. robably no comet over had. such a rosting, for it passed within 100,000 miles of the sun's surface, and possibly within the radius of the flaming prominences visible at an eclipse. The extraordinary brilliance of the tail of that 1882 comet was,. I believe, due to this near approach to the sun.

"If we have clear nights the new comel may be visible to the naked eye for some time to 'come, though' as it hat presumably-passed ita closest approach to the sun it will now diminish in brightness as time goes on."
SEEN BAYOND THE PYRAMIDS, Dr. Edmund Wälinker, Royal Astronomerol Ireland, telegraphed, from Duesick Obst?”, vatory, Dublin, "Come not seen here."
Telegraphing from Seminais, Cairo, Mr. Charington states, "I have just seon Halloy's Comet clearly with the naked nye in the sunset- sky, beyond the pyramidi. It was a wonderful sight." A telegram from Gibraltar states, Halley's comet visible at sunset to-day in the south west'with ibe naked oyo.”
These observers probably saw the new Comet, as Halley's comet, so far as the latest observations skow, is not sufficiently bright to
be visible to the naked eye at present.
The comet was SOOD on' Jaboury 20 at Oxbourne St. George, Wiltshire, Mr. Lilly.
