SLIGHT INCREASE IN BIRTH-RATE IN THE YEAR 1908.

Two outstanding features of the annual re- port of the Registrar-General with regard to the population of England and Wales during the year 1908 are the very slightly increased birth rate and the rather alarming growth of "cancer in this country.

The births registered in the year under no- tica were 940,383. In proportion to the total population there were 'equal to a rate of 16,5 per 1,000 living, this being 0.2 above the rate' sacorded in 1907; but is was, at iba simo time,
