Sir Henry May, Sportsman.

COLONIALSECRETARY'S NEW BOOK.

HISTORY OF PONY AND HORSE RACINO IN HONGKONO,"

Another illpistration' of the old adage that it is the busy man who has most time to spars is afforded by the appearance of a new volume o sport by Sir Francis May, entitled "Notes on Fany and Horse Racing in Hongkong," it was only a year or two ago that the Colonial Secretary published what we then termed a vademecum to the sport of yachting, but the sporting fysiincts of the writer were by no menna exhausted with that fubject, Aud in this brochure on "Pony and Horse Racing Je Hongkong" we have a fresh example of the mkay-sidedoess of the author, In con way, the book or booklet (it only, extends to 38 pages) is far 100 modest and unas. suming. It is a record of the early days of racleg in Hongkong and nothing more. At Arst eight it seems to be merely a chronolo.Ical list beginning at the year 1845, and one geis.

feeling of disappointment that the author should have missed his opportunity of writing really anecdotal history of horse racing in this Colony, especially when he is probably the best qualified in Hongkong to undertake such a task. As we get towards the and however we discover that when Sir Francis May has finished with bis cold facts and data, be is inclined to anbosom himself of some of these reminiscences which are cherished by all true sportsmen, more especially when they have passed through the hurly-burly and excite- ment of youthful" enthusiasm and catered op the quieter side of life. But here again, the perusal of these intimate little

personals " simply serves to incite the reader to ask for more. Sir Francis May only whets our uppelite with his cartaied recollections. We cap wall believe, however, that long before he bad com. plled the historical section of the work he had become well-nigh exhausted with the amount of trouble and research which were in- volved. No one who has not tried bis band at framing even ad index of events can förm the slightest conception of the mental and phy. sical labour which is required in order to patch together even the most trivial occurrences, And when the end is reached the result at first sight seems sa incommensurate with the exer- tion that the worker is almost inclined to feel annoyed. Is this case, however, much valu- able material which would otherwise have dis appeared bas been rescued tram the lumber. shelves of the Library and other places, and the result is a bandy book of reference which will appeal to all sporitmap in Hongkong, whether they are owners, riders, backers, or simply on- lookers.

What led Sir Francis. May to assume the duty of recording in semi-official form the meatings hold under the auspices of the Jockey Club? That question, which was certain to have been naked, is answered in a prefatory aote by the author, The subject cropped up at one of the annual dinners of the Stewards of the Jockey Club, and before we go father we must quote Sir Francis May's appreciation of the delights of these functions. He is speaking of the personalities of those present

that conversation turned on byégode days, when thorough bred barses imported from Eugland competed for the Blue Riband of the Hongkong Turf in Happy Valley. As usual somebody sagely remarked that it was a pity there" "was no record of the races in the early days of the Colony and as usual Sir Henry stepped into the breach, saying that he would confine 'his. Jaboure to that period anterior to the time when the races were confined to China posies. That he undertook a greater burden than he im- Brined

at the time he made the offer we can well understand. As a matter of fact the col- lacting and collating of notés of this character antall far more trouble than the effective

pre sentation of a mass of statistics. The work "must have been rendered additionally troubla-, some owing to the unsatisfactory way in which the old records of the Jockey Club were kept. In those days, the newspapers were not co eager to get the verg-latest event into the very latest edition as they are now, a circumstance which is commented upon in these plaintive words by the authori The accounts of the taces published at the time do not supply the Information in which the records are deficient." "However, the completed record is wonderfully Interesting and wonderfully full of quaint ~material,

There is no record of the weights carried but there is the significant date "won assy—all bolted" against this historic event. In referring to the fact that it was at this mesting that China pogies first came into their own, and that's, China pony for the first les in Hongkong was placed in a race for mixed doables the following extract quoted by Sir Henry May from the local press of the day -in well worth reproduction

But as good people of Hongkook, could render vo help why should they look mournful? They knew the old country would pull through some how and so they kept up their spirits with horse-racing. In 1858 it was not the custom? for the true sportsman to watch pony races. At least that is what we take to be the meaning. of the following septances which the author bas culled from a local newspaper of that date :

The pony races were remarkably good. but unfortunately we had ao "Sporting Correspondent on the field to record for us the feats of jockeyship. Luckily, how ever, all went off pleasantly-no spills even, save in the race for the Native Purse, when several Celestials, were suddenly transformed into Terrestials, to their own Amazement and the intense amasement, of the lookers-oq;*..

Ja 1862 a new rule was promulgated, pro. hibiting any groom professional rider from riding In.the training after the 1st December till the date of the meeting. (18th February). Two years later, however, the rule was altered to read "after the date of closing of the entries to date of meeting. In 1862 we meet the Garrison Cup and the German Cup for the first time. What will open the eyes of the ordinary reader is the immense value of many of the Cups. The Canton Cup was worth to gainess; the Garrison Cup 130 guineas the German Cup 150 guineas; the Foochow Cap 100 guineas; while Cups worth 100 guineas were commonplaces. In 1868 the Challenge Cup WAS valued at goa gaizers, o that a trophy was something like a trophy in those times.

He went to London to consult Mr. (now Šir Frederick) Treves, to whom he was introduced by the brother of Sir Francis May as a crack gentleman rider in Hongkong and Chink..

Mr. Hough was always a man of large

astone and a ball in order to ride. Dar ing the time he was laid up in Hongkong with his broken leg and on the voyaga home, he had naturally put on a great deal of weight and when he appeared to Sir F. Treves' consulting room he must have weighed nearly is none and bis shoulders gave him the appearance of weighing more.
