On hearing that the Shanghai Taotai has closed up one of the Chinese newspapers Prince Su. sent a special telegram to Taotai Tsai

The fluctuations of silver during this year have been rather small compared with the inst eight years. The highest point was reached in--Ni-huang asking for information. May with 24 and the lowest in the beginning of March, end of October and bagianlag of November with 73 1/16. The year opened with 23-3-16, but speculative purchases for the Indian

Bazzar and purchases by China as cover agains: export trade soon brought the rate over 24

It seems that holders of silver considered 14 and higher a good price and sold freely, thereby checking any furtheradvance, Stocks, bought by specolators in India, were accumulating and bolders bad to carry their stock until conditions In India improved is bring about larger par- chaser for the bazaare'; supporting influences, however, were steady Contigental purchaacs. In April the outlook for the Indian. ‘exchange bagad to look brighter. This, coupled with trade in China and speculation, bought silver

up to 248 in May, but it slowly gave way again as the demand for silver could not keep pace with the supplies from the United States and 'Canada. The pxceptionally good crop is lodis,

especially cotton, and the rise in the price of cotton has been a great factor in reducing the enormous stocks held by the Biztam. In October a very good export business set in In North. Obina and heavy purchases for the Continent during November and Dec- ember helped the price slowly up. America slopped selling freely and adverse trade condi- tions in China (import business is” on a very. moderate scale) helped further to strengthen allver, which stands quoted at the close at

THE MINERALS OF INDO-

CHINA.

The British Consut, dealing with the trade of French lado-China, refers to the minerals there.. A good deal of activity has been man fested, he says, especially lo Tonkin, in pro- specting and reserving areas. The results, however, bave hitherto been comparatively din appointing, and, owing to difficulty of access, poorness of deposit, lack of capital by the pro- moters or other capses, the rule has been for theso enterprises to end in nothing. An ex- ception must be made in regard to the deposits of coal in Eastern Tonkin; the coal mines of Hoagay on the coasts, north of Haiphong, have been worked for some years with considerable success. The cost is anthracite, and, besides being consumed in factories, etc., and sold to Chinese, is mixed with about zo per ceas. of Japagese coal and 10 per cent. of British coal

about 3,000 balas changed hands. The quota. tions for some qualities were forced up by Ya ar Ys the following day, when the record bigb quotation of Y13t for February delivery was sees. The Osaka. Mainichi remarks that this activity was the result of operacions by speculators, and genuine buyári merely folded their hands, watching the situation. In consequence on the same day (16th) the quota, tions on the Osaks Yarn Exchange closed at Y128.60 for December delivery. Yia9.75 for January, and Y130.55 for February delivery. It is difficult to predict the Tuture, of the yar market, continues the Osaka journal, but if the prevailing high price of raw cotton is main- tained the marker is bound to rise to keep paco with the cost of raw material. The purchase of yarn for export this year was started two or three months earlier than last year and weavi ing circles in Japan remalo very inactive, so that whether the market will advance on the opening of the New Year as generally con sidered is problematical.

The Osaka doahi notes that the Takenouchi Shoten, a cotton yara firm connected with the Osaka branch of the Mitsui Bussan Kaisha, which has made beavy purchases of gassed yarn on speculation since the spring, is reduced to a critical position on account of the collapse On Saturday afternoon, the United Services of the gassed yara market since the summer. met the Hongkong Cricket Club and the former Mr. Fujino, manager of the Osaka branch of were all dismissed in the first lunings for 324 the Mitsui Bussan, has devised a measure of runs. This match was continued this morn-relief for the Takenouchi Shoten and has un. ing at 10 o'clock, the Club electing to bat first. dertaken to export a part of the stock bald by the firm to Hongkong and South China. The Misnt is now awaiting a favourable op portunity to ship the yarn. Japanese gassed yarn, adds the Osaka Journal, has no other market abroad tban Hongkong and South Chios, where, the demand for the Japanese production does not exceed 500 bales a year. Cotton yarn merchants at Horidome, Tokyo, are also reduced to an embarrassing condition. Compared with English gassed yarn do's to Hola, the price of the Japanese production is much lower. In these circumstances, assuming the quality to be not much inferior, there should logically be great possibilities for the export of Japanese gassed yarn to England. The Farn merchants have, accordingly, with a view to forcing up the market, circulated a report that Messrs. Samuel, Samuel & Co., and the Mitsui Baan Kaisha have on foot a scheme to export Japanese gassed yarn in large quantities to Eogland. It goes without saying, concludes the Arad, that Japanese gasied yarn $3 is quite vosuitable la English weavers. 1g

The London correspondent of the. Zima Ceylon writes as follows:-

The Stock Exchange Garette has been publi- shing an instructive series of articles on the probable profits of leading rubber companies three years hepce, and a study of them will enable intending investors to form a good general idea of the appreciative powers posses sed by the companies treated of. Of coube, it is quite impossible for any writer sitting bern in London, and who has probably never seen rabber eitate, to predicate with any ceniinty what the profits are likely to be on any parts- cular property three years bodice, eyep if the price of rubber in 19 in was known. Laböne difficultles on ope estate, an attack flows pr white anis on another might, complarly falsify these estimates, but, taking them in the rough, they are as good a guide as it is possible in flod just now. The writer hasparently taken a yield of about 8 per cell what will be looked far by the public, ada seng price in 1912 of 41 a poung, vita which he tells un, some of his crilic) con- sider too low. The first company rund of is the Selangor, to which he righis gives pride of place, and be estimates that riaren years hence this concern should be payl per cent, and the price should be 58 of 35%, which was the quotation when't... cia was wiļṭtes
