THE BUSINESS' HALF-YEAP.
RESULT OF ONKING OF COMPANIES IN
JAPAN.
COTTON SPINNING.
The Ascht has an article dealing with the results of the working of companies in various branches of business for the half-year now cloi ing. The journal notes that spinning com panies generally bald a large stock of raw cotton purchased at a lower price and brought over from the preceding period, and the yarn market :uled comparatively bigh. To conte quence it a beavy advance in the price of raw cotton seen since September has not had much effect on the profit of the spinning com- panies for the present period, and gene... rally they have baan able to obtain result no less favourable than for the preced- ing period. The Osaka, Setiau, Fukushima, and Kisegafucki are ésch enabled to pay a

WEAVING.
4
With large stocks of raw cotton bought at a low price, the weaving of broad widths (hirohad s-mono) has been satisfactory, but the result of cotton flamed weaving has been varied, 'depending as it does on the method of selling the goods. The result of the weaving of silk and wool mized and of purely silke goods has been unsatisfactory.
PETROLEUM INDUSTRY.
The output of oil for the period under review has not been less, if it has been no more, than that for the corresponding period in past years, sod the method of refining has shown some improvement, but every company has been involved in on small expense by reason of the competition of foreign oil. The price has con-
sequently bean tow, with the result that the sot back received in the past by some of the com- panies could not be’neutralised. The Hoden Petroleum Company has been obliged to réduce its rate of dividend considerably, and the Japan Petroleum Company will be able to maintain its former rate of to "per cent. only with difficulty.
SUGAR REFINING,
The production of suger has been satisfactory and the market has bran maintained fairly well, the supply and demand being well balanc. ed; but the reserva for the maintenance of machinery and plant having boon inadequate, each company has had to provide further fonds for this purpose, and the dividend of the Kaba Sugar Company will be restricted to y per cent. per acoum,
FERTILISERS., *
So satisfactory has been the sale of fertilisers that a, scarcity of supply was felt at one time and the stack which had congested the markets has been cleatad, Such being the case, the |result of the working of the fertiliser companies has been generally satisfactory, but they have for the most part, been compelled to forego a distribution of dividend, all the profit beleg devoted to balancing the losses in the past.
'ELECTRIC LIGHT COMPANIES. ·
The demand for electric light has continued to increase year by year, sccompanied by a cor- responding increase in the revenue, but the Osaka Electric Light Company has reduced its dividend by 1 per cent, for the purpose of im proving the position of the company, and the Kyoto Electric Light Company is also propor ing to increase its reserve and distribute a lower dividend..
FIRE INSURANCE.
The fire insurance, companies have been affected by the Osaka conflagration, but the result of the working since that date is said to bave much improved, and it is probable dividends will not be much if at all reduced.
LIFE INSURANCE.
Competition bas steadily increased in the life Insurance business, and canvassing expeniss have multiplied in proportion, but the result of the operations has becú favourable. Moreover, the companies have reaped considerable profit from the advance in the price of bonds held by
CHRISTMAS and NEW YEAR them, and it is estimated that they will be able to distribute a dividend at a late not lower than CARDS.J
that for last year.

BANKING BUSINESS,
The half-year about to close has proved a very bad period for the banks. Than the result of the working" is fear satisfactory and probably no company will be able to distribute a dividend at the same rate as before without reducing the amount placed to reserve. This will doubtless have to be done if the Nankai Railway pays to par cent, the Kyoto Electric Tramway to per cont.,, and the Hanshin E'ectric Railway 17 per cent, as be- fore-Japan Chronicle.
