The controversy had, raged for some time beneath the yellow roofs of the Forbidden City when the funeral of the late 'Empress Dowager gave to the revolting Empresses au opportunity of public demonstration. They Tombs as if nothing had occurred. Butt bere | went with the imperial cortège to the Eastern they declared a state of singe, refusing to re- turn to Paking until their claims were sațiled,
It does not seem to have occurred to anyone that to let the Empresies remain, where they were would be the simplest way to peace in the FIRE INSURANCE ASSOCIATION OF Palace. Perhaps it was thought that disan
ions at home were preferable to scandal abroad. A story was put about that one of the Empresses had suddenly fallen ill, and that the two others had stayed to attend her. But Pek- ing knew better; and so all manner of honoured emissaries were sent to plead with the three I go of th December, pov, all FIRE TN Terms of Government Notification No. recalcitrants to return home and all should yet INSURANCE OFFICES will be CLOSED for the Transaction of PUBLIC BUSINESS he wall,

The end of the story is probably knowa ja you. The Empresses returned at the end of last week (the weather is already bitterly cold and the Eastern Tombs can scarcely be a homely abode); they were at once visited by the Lung Yu Empreas Dowager, and were appeased with some extra' official title and extra emoluments not the fall Tis. 20,000 that they are believed to have claimed, but something fairly satisfactory. It is also under stood that some arrangement has been come to whereby the youthful Emperor will be entrasied for his education to each of the Empresses for a certain period in each yeat.
Here then, for the moment the story close but a sequel is by no means improbable.. The widows of Tung Chih have already shown their mettle with some success., Tae Lung Yi Em- press-Dowager is described as a thoroughly amiable woman but of ambitious character. It will be remembered that as the Princess Yohoopla he was believed to have been specially selected by the late Empress Dowager as Kuang Hall's chief consort, when his own inclipations would have turned also. where on account of her strength of characters and the story seems to be pot without reason,
