SALT MONOPOLY. With reference to the Kwangtung Salt Mopo- poly which it was proposed to let to certain farmers for the lacreased rental of $12,000,000 a year, it is now' learnt that the officials will place a limit on the price of this commodity which is not to exceed 'rá candareens per catty, It is the intention of H.E. Viceroy Yean to appropriate this enormous sum of money to re place the loss of reveous occasioned by the pre- polics. This salt monopoly question has at posed abolition of the different gambling mono- tracted the close attention of the people and has formed the subject of considerable dis cussion. In spite of opposition, the mane Poly will probably be granted to the tenderers shortly though strong objections are raised by the people. The suppression of gambling is a question of vila! importance, and if there is no prospect of raising melay sufficient to make good the loss to the revenus it will hardly be possible to effectually put a stop to the practice of gambling in Kwangtung.
