By reports in the other papais, it would seem that the Matmicki's 'report' was exaggerated. it appear that early on the moming of the 30th ultime news reached Moil that a steamer was found to have sunk off the Daimon!! light, four or five miles from Mature Island, just that the steamer in question had been caught outside Shimonoseki Straits. Dr. Wilder said he regretted to learn in Wash. | Arper ington that the proposal to construct credita. ble consulates is China is not likely to come to anything present. It will be remembered that leading Americans of Shanghal shaped up a plan for a $500,000 (gold) building in which to bouse the official activities of the United States at this port. On this poial Dr. Wilder said: "The beed and justification for a suita bla court and consular home in this leading Chinese port is as great as over ; iba causa is a good one and will be pressed until the building is secured, While there is co indication of such an appropriation from this Congress, yet it is trus in such matters that to those who ask it shall be given, and the Americans of Chion will not be weary of asklog. A suitabin consular home in Shanghai is a matter of time and no effort will be spared to make the time |‘of brief duration."

Dr. Wildar said President Taft expressed, as always, keen interest in conditions in Chlori "He desires to see the Empire develop to its best advantage and follows each step carefully, The result of his 13,000 miles jonzony over the country was to inform him as to conditions in the Volted States and to give millions an op portunity to see their First Citizen face to face. te bis frank, cordial way be makes friends of all who mest him: His speeches are lightened by what Charles Dickens called the human iolerant note, yet they show the trained legal mind. In him is nothing of the demago- gue. He measures things up carefully in all lights and the resultant is sense and justice. President Talt secures the confidence of people, which is the best sort of permanent Tassel for an executive and a politician. The revision of the tariff was disappointing in some sections owing to its moderation, yet, so direct

and frank has the President been in his public discussions of the work of the last Congress that the opposition is robbed of its violence, and these who were most threatening are disposed to adhere to so trustworthy a guide."

Dr. Wilder in stopping at the Kalse, "His fiva months' absence have apparently greatly re- freshed him and be expressed pleasure at being back in Shanghal,
