RÜBBER NOTES.
FACTS CONCERNING NERVOUS HOLDERS,
Waron writes to The Finamolar, of October 29 as follows:-In following the fortunes of the rubber share market fairly closely for the last three years, I have been struck by one or two things. One in the great'neiv usness of holdom, and the other the general lack of know- ledge of even insiders is prophesying, the foture. To the latter I must make s most nourable exception in favour of the commer chioditor of The Financier, who appears to ma to have been very fairly substantiated in his many forecasts. He has been generally correct, and his cheerful opcouragement and sometimes. forcibly-warded support, in his daily and weekly remarks, have been often, in times of healthy (but annoying 1) reactions, like a couple of pairs of sound crutches to one who started in rabber shares as a work-koood bull. Had
a insiders realised the furtre, is it pass.ble they would have allowed share", in view of }
rge crop returns, interim, dividemus, etc, to have remained so long at the low levels at which they stood previous to June, 19097 Holders have been hitherto extraordinarily Bervous. Now they appear to be getting, a little braver. Whos they held shares that ap- pareatly they were quite pleased with at the price of the share and the raw material, the raw material would show'a 'rise, possibly a large one, and the share value would appreciate very

the higher price of rubber for some weeks, im- mediately any fall from this bigher level took plice, the tendency was at once to put the shares down to the original level.
REASONS FOR THEIR NERVOUSNESS. The real fact, in Wason's opinion, is that this is an industry of a kind, which the public has never had a chance of associating with before, and consequently they cannot judge or gauge its possibility in the slightest. There has pro bably never before been such a chance for in- vestors, who will explore's new and unknown (and therefore terrifying) region of finance. A rabber investment differ on broad principles from any other in at least two ways:—
1. In what other undertaking does the stock- in-trade ie, the trees improve with age? In other veatures it almost invariably (barring wine and other commodities which are much subject to the, popolar taste of the moment, deteriorate.

Think of the enormous pull the old produc ing rubber companies have, simply on accoust of these two plain principles.
01
to me
THE QUESTION OF COMPETITION, Even when the competition does come, the new competitors do not compete against the old firms atrendy ja the field, but against the wild rubber companies. The generally accept- ed theory put forward that the Amazon trade will be seriously curtailed, seems ab:oiulely sound. I gather that there is a vast amount of restriction, duties and chicanery in the handling of the subbur industry in South America, and the systematic growing under the fair trade of the British flag, under heat- thier labour.conditions and with the enormous advantage.of proximity to the seaboard (for transpon), will tell, and transfer the bead. quarters of the trade to Malaya Fortunately for the British iɛvestor, freedom and plenty flourish in Malaya, and the supply of labour is ample and cheap. Hence the large profits on rabber.
