SHOULD CLERKS WORK OVERTIME,

How many hours a day should clerks-or, an they are dignified here, assistants-be compelled to work per diem? There Is a question for the economist, the free trader and the sportsman. Of course, we are well. aware that shipping clerks are the salt of the earth, and do not work at all, but we are speaking now of the humbler fry, those who do the business of the Colony. The ques- tion has arisen in Shanghai, as the result, if we remember aright, of a civil action, the details of which have escaped our memory. It was a German case in which a clerk was required to work till the work was done. It now appears that the German Consular Court has taken up the matter and these
