The value of coal produced in 1908 amounted to more than 61 million yen, equal to 60 per cent of the total value of all minerals produced in the country for that year. The principal prefectures for the production of coal are Fukuoka, Hokkaido, Sago, Nagasaki, Yamaguchi, and Ibaragi of which the first-named is responsible for 60 per can', of the whole production.

Regarding the domestic consumption of coal it should be noted that prior to 1887 the amount did not exceed a million tons, but since thea the consumption, has been steadily growing, as will be seen from the following statistics (the figures represent thousands of tons):-

As might be expected, the requirement of coal, by he factories has been larger than that of the other brar ches the figures for 1997 being more than..balf the amount of the total con- sumption. With regard to the rate of increase, he consumption by the railways' showed a 55. fold increase during the twenty years under review, that by factories a 32-fold increase, and. that by ship a 9-fold increase. Classifying the consumption of coal by the factories is. 1907 it will be seen that that used at the coal mines heads the list with about 1,500,000. toes, the spinning companies.consumo 450,000 tons, the Government Iron, Foundry at Wakamati 400,000 tons, and other Government onder- taking# 359,000;1901,

The principal destinations of Japan- asa coal are Korea, China, Hongkong, [77 and the Straits Settlements."
