·was addraised lived in Sipp ra, the Biblical Sepharvani. Her beloved was a resident of Babylon.

SALTING BABIES.
this regard than the Armenians, for they are alleged to keep their new born babies covered with salt for a period of twenty-four hours, Tha modern Greets alum sprinkle their 1 ohies with salt and even in certain portions of Germany salt is still used on a child at birth. The ‘mathers imagine that this practice brings health and strength to their offspring, and serves as well to, keep away evil spirits-Harper's
The 'range custom of salting new-born babies is still practised la certain regions of Europe and Asia. The method varies with the differing nationalities of the peoples employing it. The Armenians of Russia cover the entire skịu of the infant with a very five ialt. This is left on the baby for thies boars ar möre, when In contrast, te the position which women hold at the present day in the Oriset, they it is washed off with warm water, A mouatsip possessed in antiqulty a great degree of free-tribs of Asia Minor are even more peculiar in dom. In many respects the Oriental women of antiquity was graced with a much privilege as is the modern European woman. Particular ly in Chaldea she could 'participate in trade, manipulate her own properly, be a witness be fore court and he the guardian of her own children. Of the position of women in Egypt we know igts, but doubtless it was much higher than that of the present Mohammedan women. In one respect, however, it seems that costom has been changed very sightly, for marriage was essentially an affair of trade between the parents of the bridegroom and those of the bride. This is ascertained from the legal code of Hammurabi, King of Babylon, B. C: 2200. The future husband paid the price of the bride and her father provided her dower and trousseau. Under these circumalzones there was no such courtship as precedes "marriage in accordance with Occidental ideas. Still one may believe that many a love letter on papyrus or clay piss ed secretly between the hands of the bridal pair during the interval of their engagement.

TELLING THE AGE OF A FISH.
The age of a fish can be determined with ac- curacy by inspection of the otoliths or bony concretions which are found in the auditory apparatus. These otoliths increase in liżt dur- ing the entire life of the fish, each your adding two layers, a light-coloured layer formed in summer and a dark layer formed in autuma and winter. The alternate layers are sharply contrasted and very distinct so that there is no difficulty is counting them. The number of palis, of layers isqad to the number of years the fish bas lived. By this method Wallace has made an interesting study of the distribution of fishes of the place species over.. various sex boltoms, according to age. In this way the rapidity of growth of fishes and the effect of Baharias on the population of the sea can be determined.-Feientific American.
