Writing from Pera to the Manchester Quar. dian, on August 26, a correspondent gives the following interesting account of the rubber in

TUESDAY,

For the futors there are three possibilities of trouble. Over-production is unlikely, The latest returns show 37,500,coo trees planted on an area of 741,000 acres in the Malay Peninsula at the end of 1908 against 27,500,000 Ireet and 180,000 acres a year earlier. By far the greater part of these trees are not yet of producing ager but the amount of rubber produced is rapidly rising, apart from new planting. Ia 1907 the 2nd November, 1909, at 230 P., at his the amount was 1017 tons, and in 1908 rose to 1,580 tons.. But even that is only about per cent. of the world's supply, and at least pibetoon-twentieths of the rubber used in commerce still comes from the forests of Brazil, the Congo, and other countries. li

is quite possible to hold that for a good many years the increased supply of planta- tiva rubber from this country, Ceylon, the Dutch East Indies, etc., will do no more than provide for the increase in demand which may be expected. Motor cars and bicycles must have tyres, and the motor industry appears to be yet in its firit youth. The production of electrical appliances should go on increasing, and they use up great quantities of rubber. New uses are being found for the article almost daily, It is now used in tanning to p.oduce waterproof leather, with results which are said to be excellent. Rubber paving would become more popular if the price went down, and it has been calculated that to pave London with a two inch sheet, like that which has been so satisfactory at Euston Station, would require 90,000 tons of crude rubber. In time, no doubt, the plantations will bring down the price, but the future demand will probably be for many years as elastic as the article itself. And it Rust be remembered that wild rubber can" aal possibly be collected in the forests at day- thing like plaviation cost, so that Brazil and the Congo must be ruined before the planter ceases to make bandsome profit.

MANUFACTURED RUNDER. The second danger is the possibility of madu. COMPANY;facturing rubber. Planters and dealers, are al- most unanimous inscoffing at this idea, but they' may be aver confident. Synthetic indigo bas pretty well ruined the indigo plantations, and many other vegetable dyes have been ousted by the chemist. Synthetic'camphor bas come. into actual use within the last year or so, but
