Since our article of Friday last on the shortage of the Pars enpplies and the continued high price of the commodity, a batch of correspond-be ence has reached us questioning the basis of profie fixed in some recent prospectuses. One correspondent points out that, whilst formerly it was contomary to estimate profits on the basis of 28. 6d. per lb. the standard recently' haben 48. par lb net, and "eren 46, per 15. gross. PROBABLE COURSE OF PRICES. Thelmore important question is what is like ly to be the future course of rubber; prices?: Prior to the existing boom the price of Para rubber averaged 38 4d, par. It-that is from 1826 to 1907-the high-water mirk being in goo, when it touched gu 3d. As in well-known, the lowest price was recorded early in 1908, when it fell to 14, 98. Since that period it has gradually risen, with occasional ductus tloss to the present abnormal quotation of Su. per lb. There is no evidence of Roy events likely to take place tending to lower the price until the plantation retorns in some measure seriously compete with Para supplies which will not be for years to come, even at the present rapid rate of production. The collec tion of the wild rubber, universally known as Para a product of Frazil-is'a bazardous pro cedure, fraught with heavy as of life and incredible hardships, while the scaly labour supply, for these reasons, is liable to dimitish rather than to increase, until the Brazilian Government seriously takes up the question "of transport. Brokers in the commodity inform us that they can sen no pravént ovidence that the lower prices ruling in past years will be again roached. Whilst Eastern planters cas, it is true, market rubber at a cost of.rs, por lb on the other hand, in Brazil, overp· Ib, 'cos!n' about roughly 3s. to collect.

BRAZILIAN PRODUCTION NOT STIMULATED.

It is evident, in short, that the present bigh price has not stimulated South American pro duction; in fact, a recent dispatch on the foreign trade of Brazit states that while the exports for the "six months to goth June las! | were valued at £8,807,00, and those for the corresponding period of 1908 at only £5,753,494, yet that the quantity exported for both periods was practically equal—that.ja, 22,000 tons in round figures. It is clear, there fore, that all the indications point to the prices. of robber being maintained in futura at a much bighat average rate than in the past...

At the present kbewhere, opposita to or in the immediate time it is the custom is certalu localities for hopis servants to throw the house refase into the streets and roads at night in order to save themselves the trouble of getting up and put ting it is the dust carts or baskets in the early morning. This practice is not only insanitary but lands to the constant choking of street guilles and drains and causes premises to be flooded.

Meantime all the production estimates of the plantation companies are baing excended, but, nevertheless, the current prices obtaiced for the article are beyaad the wildest dreams' of the Eastern pioneer promoters. There are however, many in the business who would like to see the price down to 4 or 5s but they ad mit they are not sangains of this consumme tion: The simulation to increased production would then be a mịch larger, consumption owing is the new asas to which the commo.. dity could be 'pot.
