THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH MONDAY SEPTEMBER 27 1000

THE FOOCHOW TYPHOON:

"GREAT SCENE OF DESTRUCTION,

Foochow, Sept. 18, On the morning of September 15 at about two o'clock, Faochow was vielted by what is said to have been the worst typhoon in the memory of the oldest citizens. The storen camo

with very little warming and was of short dur- tion, reaching its height at between 6 am. god 7am. and then rapidly subsiding. The whole storm was accompanied by a downpour of rain which added greatly to the destruction wrought by the wind.

There is scarcely a building in the whole city but shows the marks of the storm, while the larger buildings were terribly handled. In the city the great government" school buildings were made to sway in the wind until the students were in a pasic, while the roofs were. soon so broken up that they leaked like sievės. It is said that the top stones of one of the large pagodas were pushed to one side and, though the structure standa, and will stand many more stormw, probably, it is out of the perpendicular. Crossing the river, one will be impressed with the force, of the wind from the fact that the great stone railings of the stone bridges,

BUILDINGS. with their large stone posts have, in many places, been carried completely away and are lying in the bottom of the river, The telephone and telegraph systems have been out of service aver since the storm, and the wires are com pletely carried away in many places, while there is practically nowhere in or about the city where a pole was left standing.

off from the stump or uprooted, while there is scarcely a tree that has not been badly broken." The great banyans which have stood the storms of more than ons hundred yeats, have hebn broken right off and are lying on the go

ground

or else if left standing have been ruined by the loss of their limbs The little grove in the front of the Stone Church is a wrack and its beauty

: is gone.

There is not a foreign building which escape. ed, though a few have fared fairly well as com pared to others, In the Methodist compound the trees, were rained, most of them having been broken off or uprooted. The row of buildings fronting the road cscaped with but liule damage, but the Press building was terrib ly shaken, the roof mostly broken up, while the sides were almost stripped of their Coat plaster leaving the bricks exposed. It is thought that the building, will probably have to be lowered a storey or possibly taken down. The Press residence was badly broken up as was the school building for the children of mirsignaries, located in the compound.

la the college compound the worst havoc was with the Ninde-Lacy Memorial Chapel, one side of which was completely uprooted, and the rool was carried away, Fortunately the expen- sive stained glasi windows, were left vodama g. ed, owing probably to their good screep protection. The American Consulate and the Y. M. C. A. building were, perhaps, the-next heaviest sufferers. Qor would hardly believe that a building could be so shaken by the wind and left standing as these "buildings ware, especially the Y. M. C. A. which was unroofed and largely pealed.

P-EARFUL, LOSS OF LIFE,

Co the river the loss was terrible. Probably over 1,000 people lost their lives within a few

miles of Facchow. It is reported that on the

ferries from and to Djong Loh alone, over 400

te drowned. Great junks were thrown to

gether and overturned in the river, while the loss so.the smaller boats cannot be estimated.. Many very touching scenes were witnessed by those who "weis absolutely unable to render aid, as boals went to pieces and their occupants ware drowned,

n +

A Kuling the storm did its work and while fow houses were so protected that they

received but little damage, other houses wern unroofed, and in a few cases the walls blown down, while houses which have hitherto been considered as bring practically safe lost their 5 SIZES.verandahs and part of their roots. No lives were lost, though in several cases the buildings fell in while the people were still in their bouses. I was extremely lucky that this storm came af the end of the season after most of the people bad left the mountain, else it would have been inipossible to house the refuges in the few bouses which were left in a livable condition.

A Ngucheng, on the coast, the havoc was terrible, Reports have just come in showing that the Methodist properly bar been damaged to the extent of thousands of dollars. Perhaps the heaviest sufferer is Miss Mabel Allen's, School for Women and Dr. Li Hospital, bor no building has escaped. This district has made great progress in late years in the matter. of building asw churches, and the buildings are largely of granite. To this fact is probably

due their stability, though there is not one of them that has not been practically parooled,

Great auxiety is felt for Haitan Island, where- several missionaries are living, and from which no report has sa yot arrived.-N. G. D. News,
