it was Mi, T. Neave, wäse he presided at the complimentary dinner the other day to, Mr. G. A Caldwell, the popular acting ('scretary of the Hongkong and Whampoa Dock Co, who said that we were living in a record-making age. We have to congratulate that gentleman and others associated with him in the Dock Do, upon the latest record, which they have established, thus adding another achievement in favour of Hongkong ip tha direction of ship The launch of the ss. On Let, which was successfully carried out at Hunghem Bay this morning, establishes a record in shipbuilding in the Colony for a steamer of that vessel's size. The keal-plate of the On Lee was laid on the building berth at Kowloon in the middle of May last and she was so far completed that she took the water this morning in admirable siyle within four months of the commencement of construction.
When a member of our staff visited the Docks yesterday afternoon, the hull, of the new river steamer was a conspicuous figure on the cradle, This morning she was all gay with busting preparatory to the christening ceremony. Be sides the president and directors, and a few friends, of the Sze Yip Steamship Co., Ld, to whose order the vessel has been built, there was a small party of ladies and gentle man who had been invited to witanes the care- mony, Accommodation was provided on a specially erected platform. When all was ready the order "Go"was given upon the fall of the fast block and automatically the vessel glided down the ways into the water. Mrs. Fletcher, wife of Mr. H. L, Fletcher, who ampoateaded the building on behalf of the surveyors, Messrs. Carmichael and Clarke, broke the bottle of wine across the bow of the vessel and named her the On Zer as she sped down the ways, Cheers followed amidst a dealesing fusillade of
crackers.
After the launch. Mr. W. Wilson, acting chief manager, if the Dock Co, presented Mrs. Flet cher with a gold watch bangla as a souvenir of the occasion. The bangle was suitably in- scribed. Mrs. Fletcher was also the recipient

With profuse acknowledgments the patriot retired.
This worthy example has already been emulated. According to present information, a Chinese gootleman, who desires to remain ancoymous, has made a similar offer to the Naval Commissioners. Rumour associates the name of a well-known compradore of a British fire in Hongkong with that of the second patriot..

It will thus be seen that if the Commissioners' visit fail of technical results it has, nevertheless, 'been fruitful in financial success which is a consideration of co mean importance in advan- cing China's embryonic naval scheme.

MERTING OF ANTI-OPIUM ASSOCIATION, Yesterday, at a meeting held in the Canton Anti-Opium Association, it was stated that, during the course of last week, the detectives employed by the Association arrested ninalcea opium smokers for smoking opium without the necessary wooden board licence and seized forty-two sets of smoking apparatus, The offenders have been sent tathe Police authorities to be dealt with. At the meeting it was sug- Rosted that the Association should communi Cate with the Cauton Chamber of Commerce and the Caston Self-Government, Society inform ing then of the present critical condition of affairs in connection with the deadlock in the opiam trade brought about by the import dealers of raw opium refusing to order the drug from Hongkong owing to the enforcement in Canton of the regulation having reference to the tripli- cate permit question and the subsequent arrest of one of the dealers. The meeting suggested that joint action should be taken to deal with one Ctuo Fock Choong, the opium mercbaat here, who refused to apply for the permits to cover the sale of raw opium as required by the officials and whose arrest was brought about in consequence."
