The cargo-bost dristed up stream owing to an unfavourable wind and aggressive tide. The current bore the cargo-boat to as far as the French gunboat Vigilante's pontoon and got alongside of it. The fire in a short time spread to the postoon, which sustained damages to the extent of a few thousand dollars. In September the Buning was healed up on a slip and the bull below water-line treated with two coats of bitumastic solution.

River Police-The work of the River Polica during the year has been very satisfactory, but owing to lack of men it has not been possible to patrol the extreme upper and lower limits of the harbour and the Sooch w Creek as well as is desired. The establishment of a sub station at Sioza for exclusive patrol of the Soo chow Creek is necessary. Inspector Mellows reports that the manner in which cases taken before the Pootang Magistrate are dealt with is very unsatisfactory. The Court sits soms times during the night, and often not for days together. The prison accommodation is very bad, and bath, complainant and accused are detained for days together, pending the settle ment of a case. The following in a list of the cases coming under the notice of the River Polica:-

"RIGE FED CHINESE FIQS“

FIRST APPEARANCE AT SMITHFIELD,'

First consignment of rice-fed Chinese pig So runs the announcement which is displayed above a dozen or more large carcases, that is exciting considerable interest at the Central Meat Market at Smithfield.

From the first consignment Messts: Henry S. Fitter and Sons have taken a few preliminary samples, the wholesale price being 4id or gå a pound, compared with dd, or thereabouts, for English pork..

Mr. Fliter expressed in an interview.the con viction that there is a great fature for Chinese pork in this country. The reason that if human never been imported before is that freezing, chambers have only just been built in China. One effect of the development in trade in tali direction will probably be a father Improve- ment in the breed of Chinese pigs.

As to, the importation of pork from "Chins there should be no difficulty whatever, it is thought, as soon as the saw trade gats into working order. It should run as smoothly as the trade in other imported meat "Look, for example, at the New Zealand lamb," Mr. Fitter remarked, "we have just received a record quantity, and the quality is the finest we have and on the way to last til Christmas, so that ever had. There is enough la London now the public peed not be afraid this year of daar mutton or lamb. And there are similarly great possibilities for Chinese pork."

August, of course, is not the month one would ordinarily choose for pork, and the balk cold storage till September.—P. H. G. of the consignment will probably be kept in
